Do not choose your hiking water from distance alone. Plan for the longest time between dependable water points, then account for heat and effort, add a reserve, and check the result against the land manager’s current advice. A five-mile exposed climb with no water is a different problem from a five-mile shaded loop beside a confirmed tap.

This worksheet deliberately does not prescribe one amount for every hiker. The public guidance itself shows why that would be misleading: the National Park Service says to identify water sources before leaving, NIOSH publishes a controlled heat-work reference, and Grand Canyon National Park warns that some routes have no water and can exceed 110°F. The route, conditions, and person must stay visible in the calculation.

The output is a planning range for the dry segment plus reserve, not an instruction to force that amount down. If the result is too heavy to carry safely, the answer is to shorten or change the route, start in cooler conditions, use a genuinely verified refill, or postpone—not to erase the reserve.

Step 1: calculate time between dependable sources

Mark every possible water point on the route, then classify it:

  • Dependable: the current land-manager source says it is available for your date and season.
  • Conditional: availability depends on an opening time, seasonal flow, treatment method, or a recent status update.
  • Unverified: shown only on an old map, app, review, or forum report.
  • Unavailable: closed, dry, contaminated, prohibited, or absent on that route.

For the first calculation, treat conditional and unverified sources as unavailable. Reclassify one only after you confirm its current status and have an appropriate treatment plan where required.

Now estimate elapsed time—not only moving time—from the last dependable source to the next one. Include pauses, slow sections, navigation checks, and the possibility that the group moves at its slowest member’s pace. This longest dry segment is the foundation of the carry plan.

The NPS Ten Essentials guidance supports this source-first approach. It tells visitors to carry water and treatment supplies and to identify water bodies that could be collected from and treated before the trip. That is stronger planning evidence than assuming a stream icon means a reliable refill.

Step 2: use a reference rate without turning it into a universal rule

For a bounded comparison, NIOSH’s heat-stress recommendations say that workers doing moderate activity in heat for less than two hours should drink one cup—8 US fluid ounces—every 15 to 20 minutes. That works out to roughly 24 to 32 US fluid ounces per hour, or about 0.7 to 0.95 litres per hour. NIOSH also says fluid intake generally should not exceed six cups per hour.

Those numbers describe workers performing moderate activity in heat; they are not a prescription for every hike. They are useful as a stress-test input: if a hot, strenuous segment pushes your plan toward that kind of demand, a casual cool-weather bottle estimate is probably not adequate. The correct response may be a shorter route or cooler start rather than carrying an impractical volume.

OSHA’s heat guidance adds two important boundaries. It recommends frequent drinking during short hot work instead of waiting only for thirst, and says work lasting more than two hours should include access to electrolyte-containing fluids because prolonged sweating loses salts as well as water. This does not mean every two-hour walk requires a sports drink; it means duration, heat, sweating, food, and electrolyte needs should not be collapsed into a water-only formula.

Step 3: add a delay reserve as a separate line

A reserve should correspond to a plausible delay. Write the scenario before choosing the volume:

  • one extra hour because the group is slower than expected;
  • backtracking to the last confirmed junction;
  • a minor problem that requires a long rest;
  • a planned tap being closed;
  • a pickup, shuttle, or gate delay.

Keeping reserve separate prevents two common mistakes. You can see whether the base plan is already unrealistic, and you are less likely to consume the delay allowance casually in the first part of the hike.

There is no honest universal reserve percentage. On a maintained loop close to help, an additional time block may be enough. On a route with no water, extreme heat, or delayed rescue, the land manager may advise a much larger carry or discourage the hike entirely.

A worked planning example

Suppose two beginners plan a loop with these inputs:

  • 3 hours of expected movement;
  • 30 minutes of planned stops;
  • no currently verified water after the trailhead;
  • a warm forecast, but not an official extreme-heat warning;
  • one additional hour allowed for a slower return or navigation delay.

The dry segment is therefore 3.5 planned hours plus a separate 1-hour reserve. The hikers should compare that 4.5-hour exposure with current local guidance, their own recent experience in similar conditions, and a conservative planning range appropriate to the forecast and work rate. They should then check whether the resulting carried mass is realistic for each person.

This example intentionally stops before declaring a universal litre total. A person who has safely established a cool-weather rate on comparable walks has useful personal evidence. A first-time hiker in heat does not. If the route authority issues a heat warning, reports no water, or recommends a specific carry, that current instruction replaces the generic worksheet.

When the arithmetic says change the hike

Do not solve every water problem by adding weight. Change the plan when:

  • the required carry is beyond what the group can move safely;
  • the only refill is unverified, seasonal, or outside your treatment method’s limits;
  • current warnings describe extreme heat, unavailable water, fire restrictions, flooding, or a closure;
  • the route has a long exposed climb during the hottest hours;
  • anyone is unwell, not acclimatized, or has a medical reason generic hydration advice may not apply;
  • the plan has no credible reserve or turnaround option.

Grand Canyon National Park’s current Hike Smart page makes this override concrete. It directs hikers to check water availability, heat risk, weather, and trail conditions; warns that some summer routes have no water and very limited shade; and says hikers must carry sufficient water while having a plan to return safely. It also tells hikers not to force fluids. Together, those points reject both under-planning and blind consumption targets.

Drinking during the hike

Keep the plan available rather than burying all water at the bottom of the pack. Check remaining volume at known points and compare it with time, conditions, and the return route. A faster-than-planned first half does not guarantee an easy second half, especially when the return climbs or afternoon heat increases.

NPS national guidance says active visitors, especially in hot weather, should drink often and before becoming thirsty. Grand Canyon’s route-specific advice says not to force fluids and to drink when thirsty. These are not instructions to ignore each other; they show why a planning article cannot substitute for current local guidance or individual medical advice. Carry enough for the credible conditions, monitor yourself and the group, eat and replace electrolytes as appropriate during prolonged sweating, and do not chase a rigid hourly target after symptoms appear.

Confusion, fainting, severe weakness, vomiting, loss of coordination, or altered behaviour is not a spreadsheet problem. Stop exertion, get to a safer/cooler setting when possible, and seek emergency help according to the route’s emergency plan.

Five-minute pre-departure check

  1. Open the land manager’s current conditions page.
  2. Confirm each planned refill and its treatment requirement.
  3. Recalculate the longest dry segment using elapsed time.
  4. Add a written delay scenario and reserve.
  5. Check heat, sun, humidity, altitude, climbing, pack weight, and group pace.
  6. Convert the result into containers and verify that each person can carry and access their share.
  7. Change the route if the carry, uncertainty, or warning is unacceptable.
  8. Share the route and return time with someone who is not on the hike.

It reconciles four current US public-safety pages: NPS Ten Essentials, NIOSH heat-work hydration recommendations, OSHA Water-Rest-Shade guidance, and Grand Canyon NPS Hike Smart advice. Their claims were separated by context—general outdoor preparation, controlled occupational heat exposure, prolonged sweating, and a route-specific extreme environment—before being used in the worksheet.

No water container was tested and no personalized hydration target was calculated. The worksheet is for planning an ordinary beginner day hike, not for diagnosing or treating dehydration, heat illness, hyponatremia, or another medical condition. Children, pregnancy, medical conditions, medications, recent illness, altitude, extreme heat, remote travel, and overnight trips need individualized advice and current route-authority guidance.
